Characters Make Worlds

The art of storytelling

I think about the stories I loved growing up.

  • Dragon Ball
  • Gundam
  • The Matrix
  • Star Wars
  • Marvel
  • Naruto

They all have something very particular in common. They build worlds and tell amazing stories through the worlds they build.

World building is really an art. Too much focus on the world and you lose the plot. Too much focus on the plot and the world can't carry the stories in a cohesive, interconnected manner.

But there's something about world building I'd neglected until now.

The world builder.

This is the person that comes up with the wildest ideas and connects them into stories that resonate with millions of people. They know something important. The world is the backdrop for stories about people.

The world augments the person's story. We see how characters are shaped by circumstances, and while different worlds create different circumstances, it’s the richness of a character that keeps drawing us in.

Abstract thinking that slowly pieces itself together. Like nodes on a grid that slowly connect and form a masterpiece of engineering. Some of the best worlds start off as wild ideas. It's the amazing stories that allow the world to flourish.

The more I think about it, the more I realize I might be a world builder. Always in my head about random ideas. Always finding ways to connect the dots between them. I should explore this more.
